ماہ صفر کی بیسویں تاریخ،روز اربعین یعنی امام حسین ؑ کے چہلم کا دن ہے۔ شیخ مفید اور شیخ طوسی کے بقول امام حسین ؑ کے اہل حرم کے شام سے مدینہ واپس آنے کا دن ہے۔ اور امام حسین ؑ کے پہلے زائر (جابر بن عبد اللہ انصاری) کے کربلا میں وارد ہونے کا دن ہے۔ اس دن میں امام حسین کی زیارت مستحب ہے اور امام حسن عسکری علیہ السلام کے فرمان کے مطابق اس دن کی زیارت مومن کی ایک نشانی ہے۔

شیخ طوسی نے زیارت اربعین کی کیفیت اپنی کتاب تہذیب میں صفوان جمال سے روایت کی ہے، جس میں آیا ہے کہ حضرت امام جعفر صادق علیہ السلام نے مجھے فرمایا کہ اربعین (چہلم) کے دن جب سورج بلند ہو تو ان جملات کی تلاوت کرو۔
