It calculates the friction factor based on the preferred methods of Trane, Carrier and ASHRAE - by iteratively solving the Colebrook equation for the friction factor based on airflow (with a different roughness coefficient for flexible duct if selected). Rapid HVAC Duct Sizing then applies this friction factor to determine the pressure drop. Through the use of hydraulic diameter, it works as an oval duct and circular duct as well as rectangular duct sizer.
